Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD)

Bookable in 90 minute increments, all MLD and Full body Lymphatic Drainage massages offered by We Luv Freely bodywork include a consultation with your practitioner.  During this pre-consult during your visit you will work with your Licensed Massage Therapist to adjust the focus to particularly swollen areas or your unique needs.

Travis Matthews' approach to lymphatic drainage massage is to take stock of the entire body and view it as one complete system. Many recipients treat manual lymphatic drainage as an occasional maintenance process that is needed from time to time to promote a more healthy organism.

What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized form of massage utilizing light rhythmic strokes to move lymph fluid through the body towards healthy lymph nodes, reducing swelling and encouraging natural waste renewal cycles. Rather than focusing on deep muscle tension, MLD targets the top layers of skin, stretching and lightly pushing fluid along natural drainage flows.

Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage assists the body's natural cycle of renewal of fluids. MLD is frequently recommended after cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, as well as orthopedic surgery to accelerate the clearance of fluid buildup, reduce bruising, and minimize scar tissue formation. MLD is used to manage lymphedema (having lymph nodes removed) or by persons with damaged lymph nodes. It also helps relieve chronic swelling caused by damage to or removal of lymph nodes, which often occurs during cancer treatments. Lymphatic massaging can provide relief from fluid accumulation and discomfort associated with conditions like fibromyalgia, lipedema, and chronic venous insufficiency.

What is it like to receive Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Lymphatic Drainage massage is characterized by a very light touch utilizing little, if any, oil paired with short rhythmic motions. The experience should be relaxing, soothing and comfortable.

How often should you get a manual lymphatic drainage massage?

Most clients benefit from 1 to 3 sessions per week, depending on whether the treatment is for post-surgery recovery, lymphedema management, or general wellness. For cosmetic or post-operative healing (such as liposuction or tummy tucks), daily or alternate-day sessions are recommended during the first two weeks. For ongoing maintenance and general detox, 1 to 2 sessions per month is ideal.

How soon after surgery can you get a manual lymphatic drainage massage?

You can safely receive manual lymphatic drainage within 24 to 48 hours after surgery, provided you have clearance from your surgeon. Early MLD treatments accelerate post-op recovery by clearing excess fluid buildup, reducing severe bruising, preventing seroma formation, and softening hard scar tissue during the critical first phase of healing.
