Trigger Point Massage

Offered in 30 minute sessions, trigger point or targeted area massages are often highly specific to each client. Travis Matthews believes in adjusting his bodywork approach to fit the exact needs of the client. Let him know what feels off.

Perfect for a refresh while traveling to Salt Lake City or an after work interventional session after a tough day at the office. These sessions can be booked in-studio only.

What is a trigger point massage on a targeted area?

Trigger point massage (sometimes also referred to as neuromuscular therapy) is a targeted bodywork technique designed to locate and release "trigger points", which are hyper-irritable knots formed within tight bands of muscle fascia. These knots develop when muscle fibers remain in a persistent state of micro-contraction, restricting local blood flow, accumulating metabolic waste, and causing both localized tenderness and referred pain. Referred pain is often felt as discomfort that radiates to another area of the body, such as a knot in the shoulder causing a headache. During a session, a practitioner applies focused, sustained pressure directly onto the knot using fingers, thumbs, or elbows for 30 to 90 seconds, forcing the muscle fibers to relax, restoring circulation, and breaking the pain cycle.

What does a trigger point massage feel like?

During a trigger point massage, you can expect to feel intense, targeted, and sustained pressure directly on specific "knots"—tight, hyper-irritable bands of muscle tissue. Unlike the gentle, gliding strokes of a relaxation massage, the practitioner isolates these tender spots using focused pressure with their fingers, thumbs, or elbows, holding each point for 30 to 90 seconds. You will likely feel a distinctive "good hurt"—a sensation that is sharp or deep yet distinctly therapeutic—and you may experience referral pain, where pressing a knot in one area triggers a dull ache, warmth, or tingling in a completely different part of your body (such as a shoulder spot radiating into your neck or temple). As the restricted muscle fibers finally release, you will feel a gradual "melting" or softening of the tension. The session is interactive, requiring you to communicate discomfort levels, and it is normal to feel mild, post-workout-style soreness in the treated areas for 24 to 48 hours afterward.

How to get rid of muscle knots under shoulder blade?

Getting rid of a muscle knot under your shoulder blade requires targeted direct pressure, chest stretching, and focused bodywork. For immediate self-care relief, roll a lacrosse ball between your upper back and a wall over the knot for 30 to 60 seconds while taking deep breaths. Because shoulder blade knots (often in the rhomboids or levator scapulae) are notoriously hard to release on your own, professional trigger point massage is the most effective way to deactivate deep spasms, restore blood flow, and relieve radiating neck or back pain.

What's the best massage for stubborn muscle knots?

Trigger point therapy (neuromuscular therapy) is the single best massage for stubborn, recurring muscle knots. While standard deep tissue massage uses broad strokes across entire muscle groups, trigger point therapy isolates individual hyper-irritable knots and applies direct, sustained pressure for 30 to 90 seconds. This targeted technique breaks the pain-spasm cycle, releases chronic micro-contractions, clears referred pain patterns, and provides long-lasting relief where conventional massages fall short.
